Robert Pires has urged Arsenal to wrap up a deal for ‘quality’ Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

AC Milan had expressed a strong interest in him earlier this year but now Arsenal have emerged as surprise candidates to sign the 30-year-old.

Gunners legend Pires has encouraged the club to get a deal over the line. ‘Everybody knows Marouane Fellaini in the Premier League,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘Of course last season it was very, very difficult, the relation with Jose Mourinho.

‘But I think he’s a good player, if he wants to join Arsenal I think it would be good news. He needs a new start and I think, with his quality, I think he can help Unai Emery and he can help the Arsenal players in the squad.’

Emery has been given a limited budget for players this summer and the club’s recruitment chief Sven Mislintat has made defensive reinforcements their priority this summer.

So the deal would make financial sense, with Emery’s other midfield targets, Morgan Sanson and Jean-Michael Seri expected to cost in excess of £30million.

Arsenal do however look set to complete a deal for for Paris Saint-Germain youngster Yacine Adli and Pires is confident that the midfielder can thrive under Emery.

‘He’s a talented player. I know him,’ the Frenchman said. ‘He has very good quality, he’s very fast with the ball.

‘Sometimes he can score. I know Emery likes this type of player. ‘I don’t know what’s happening but if he joined Arsenal, I think he would be a good player for the new squad.’
