Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka hints at Borussia Monchengladbach return as he says the ‘doors will be open’ if the Bundesliga side is ‘willing’ to bring him back at the end of his contract

  • Granit Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 for £35m
  • The Swiss midfielder is contracted at the Emirates until the end of 2023-2024
  • Xhaka says he would consider a return to Germany at the end of his current deal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka would be willing to rejoin former club Borussia Monchengladbach when his current deal expires.

The Swiss international spent four seasons at the Bundesliga side before joining Arsenal for £35m in 2016.

Xhaka is contracted to the Gunners until 2024 and would be interested in a return to Monchengladbach if the German side were also interested.

He said on the Mit Geredet podcast: ‘I never made the move from Borussia to Arsenal for the money. It was a dream for me to play in England.

‘I have just extended my contract, which still has two and a half years to run.

‘Then I’ll be 32, and if Max Eberl (Monchengladbach’s director of sport) is willing to bring me back when I’m 32, my door will be open.’

Xhaka signed a one-year contract extension with Arsenal over the summer, following interest from Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

The 29-year-old is currently out of action after he was forced off in September’s 3-1 victory over Tottenham in the north London derby.

He suffered a medial knee ligament injury and was expected to be sidelined at the time for three months.

Despite a firm fan favourite at Monchengladbach, he has not had such a popular reputation at the Emirates.

He has often been seen as one of the reasons for Arsenal’s on field issues over recent seasons and was stripped of the captain’s armband after he threw it on to the floor in an angry reaction to being booed by Gunners fans in their draw with Crystal Palace in October 2019.

Since joining Arsenal he has scored 13 goals in 225 appearances.
