Arthur Melo opens up on ‘difficult times’ during Liverpool loan spell

Arthur Melo went through ‘difficult times’ during failed loan at Liverpool after making just ONE appearance… but ‘unlucky’ Brazilian thanks Jurgen Klopp and his then-team-mates for ‘helping’ him get back on track

  • A torn thigh muscle ruined Arthur Melo’s loan spell in England with Liverpool
  • The Brazilian midfielder made just one first team appearance for the Reds
  • He has reflected on his difficult time in England in a chat with Mundo Deportivo

Arthur Melo has thanked Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s players for helping him through a ‘difficult moment’ during a miserable loan spell at Anfield.

The Brazilian headed to Merseyside eager to jumpstart his career after stalling in Italy with Juventus.

But a torn thigh muscle back in October put paid to his progress in the Premier League and he would go on to make just one first team appearance – a Champions League defeat to Napoli – for Liverpool.

Speaking about how mentally tough it was on the sidelines, Melo did not hide the fact he needed to lean on the dressing room for support.

‘I think I was a bit unlucky,’ he told Mundo Deportivo.

‘But that is in the past and I feel much better than then. I really want to play again and seek my highest level as a player.’

He added: ‘I went through difficult times, but it was very important for me to have the support of everyone, from the coach, Klopp, and the entire coaching staff, to my team-mates. The dressing room helped me a lot in a difficult moment.’

Arthur struggled to make up for the lack of a proper pre-season with his parent club owing to conjecture over his future – and his bid to step up his fitness cost him with his injury.

Arthur made just one appearance for Liverpool,  against Napoli in the Champions League last September as he played just 13 minutes.

Arthur joined Juventus in 2020 and has made 63 appearances for the Italian club. Prior to that he played for Gremio and Barcelona.

There are two years remaining on Arthur’s contract at Juventus but he is unsure what the future holds.

‘I will return to Turin, but the transfer window is very long and we don’t know what will happen. Something interesting may come up for me and for Juventus. I have a contract and I respect it, but we’ll see,’ he concluded.
