A mother was left in hysterics when she received an Asda delivery to find that a rubber duck had been substituted for the nuts she had ordered.
The supermarket guarantee that if a shopper buys a product online which is out of stock, they will exchange it for a similar item.
So when customer Channelle Johnson, of Ashington, Northumberland, unpacked her weekly shop to find a bath toy as a replacement for her favourite savoury snacks she was stunned.
The 21-year-old, and her partner Karl Richardson, 25, ordered five 35g packets of Asda’s own Holy Smokes Smoky BBQ Mix priced at 39p each – but was supplemented by a Munchkin Safety Bath Duck costing £2.99.

Channelle, who works as an administrator, said: ‘It was definitely an eye opener to say the least.
‘Usually I properly check through the substitutions list as soon as I get the email, but I couldn’t that day because I was at a christening all morning.
‘The delivery man came to the door and my partner Karl answered. He asked if we were happy with the substitutions and Karl presumed I was because I usually check.

‘Then he went though the list and it was apples instead of pears and things like that – but half way down he burst into giggles.
‘He showed us what it said and thought it was misprinted. He had to offload all of the shopping to see if he could find this duck.
‘He said it was one of the strangest replacements he had ever seen.
‘No idea why, but we took it anyway – more for the novelty than anything.
‘We just couldn’t stop giggling about it. It will be my daughter Kacey’s fourth birthday on Thursday and she thought that the delivery driver was bringing her an early present.’

She explained that she often takes advantage of substitutions during her weekly shop, but said that they are usually fairly accurate
The mum-of-one added: ‘I am the type of person who will literally only buy what we need – I plan every meal strategically.
‘So when we didn’t actually have the nuts that we ordered I had to go out and buy some more, which was rather inconvenient.
‘There is a full aisle dedicated to just nuts in my local Asda, so they had so much to choose from.
‘It was sheer laziness really.
‘It know that it is funny and amusing, but if it had been something I really needed then I would have been annoyed.
‘I love Asda’s delivery service, as a working mum I don’t have time to go shopping and my weekends are precious – so it is a blessing.
‘Every week without fail there are substitutions, but they are never this off.
‘Just before Christmas my mum ordered a bottle of sparkling water and a bar of
Dove soap came instead – so I think I have beaten that.’
An Asda spokesperson said: ‘Oops! This substitute is quackers and clearly didn’t fit the bill.
We’re not quite sure how it happened but we’ll make sure we get our ducks in a row from now on.’
