Ashanti reveals the meaning behind her and Nelly’s baby: ‘His dad named him with a lot of pride’

Ashanti opened up Wednesday about the meaning of the name of the newborn baby son she welcomed with husband Nelly, Kareem Kenkaide ‘KK’ Haynes.

The 43-year-old songstress earlier Wednesday confirmed that she welcomed her son with the Hot In Herre rapper, 49, on July 18.

The Glen Cove, New York-born beauty explained to Entertainment Tonight the meaning of her son’s name.

‘Kenkaide is my dad’s name, and obviously my dad has only girls,’ Ashanti told the outlet.

The baby’s middle name, Kareem, has Arabic origins and translates to ‘generous, kind and dignified,’ she told the outlet.

Ashanti said that Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., was the person who named their son.

‘His dad named him with a lot of pride’ and thought the name was ‘really, really dope,’ Ashanti told the outlet.

Ashanti told the outlet that she and her spouse welcomed their child ahead of schedule, and Nelly flew in at the last moment to be there for the birth.

‘Having all of us in the delivery room and seeing his face for the first time, I cried it was just so emotional and spiritual at the same time,’ Ashanti told the outlet.

The singer of hits such as Foolish and Rock wit U (Awww Baby) said that ‘it was such an electrifying feeling’ as she became a parent for the first time, as she had ‘a vision of this moment for so long.’

Ashanti said that she was fully committed to parenthood, saying, ‘My son definitely dictates everything now, he is the priority overall and I don’t care what it will take, what I have to do, I’m just going to give everything and my all to my son.

She added that ‘this little boy has my entire soul wrapped around his finger.’

The singer advised other new mothers to follow their gut instincts ‘and keep strong no matter what the obstacles bring.’

Ashanti told the outlet, ‘Your child absolutely feels your energy. Make sure that the baby feels secure and safe and you have to have space for you as well.

‘Don’t get too lost into the world of the baby. I think that it’s really important to create a balance.’

Ashanti, whose son with Nelly is her first child, added, ‘I’m super brand new so I’m not trying to give the golden advice.’

The couple have been wed since late last year.
