  • England need big second day with pink ball to stop Australia posting big score

England need a big second day in Adelaide if they are to have any chance of stopping Australia in their tracks in this Ashes series.

After a 10-wicket defeat in Brisbane, attention has now turned to the day-nighter in Brisbane, with Joe Root making the bold decision to bowl first on Saturday.

The hosts’ top scorer on the opening day was David Warner, who scored 47 before being caught behind by Jonny Bairstow off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

Steve Smith was the victim of England’s biggest wicket of the day, undone by debutant Craig Overton with 40 runs to his name.

James Anderson, Woakes and Overton all have one wicket to their name at the start of play on day two, with England desperate for a good day with the ball to stop the hosts posting a big first-innings score.

Australia resume in Adelaide on 209-4, with Peter Hanscomb and Shaun Marsh at the crease.
