Ashes 2017, LIVE: Australia vs England – Day 4 update

  • At the close of play of day three, Australia were 53 for four, with a lead of 268
  • England had looked a beaten side when wickets began to tumble on Monday
  • But Craig Overton and Chris Woakes put on 66 for the eighth wicket in Adelaide
  • Nathan Lyon finished with four wickets as England were bowled out for 227
  • Jimmy Anderson and Chris Woakes took two wickets each to give England hope

Four late wickets on day three have given England a feint hope of saving the second Ashes Test heading into the penultimate day’s play in Adelaide.

England were staring down the barrel of a chastening defeat after the dangerous Australian attack ripped through their top and middle order to leave them 142 for seven chasing 442.

But a 66-run stand from Chris Woakes and debutant Craig Overton helped England recover before they were eventually all out for 227.

Steve Smith decided against enforcing the follow on, a decision he may have regretted come stumps. Jimmy Anderson and Woakes took two wickets apiece in the final session to reduce Australia to 53 for four at the close. Their lead is 268.
