Ashley Young sends cheeky tweet after doing ex-club Man United a massive favour in top-four race

‘Nothing like a plan coming together!’: Ashley Young sends cheeky tweet to Gary Neville after Aston Villa’s draw with Liverpool put his former club Man United on the brink of a top-four finish

Aston Villa full back Ashley Young posted a cheeky tweet on Sunday morning after doing his former club Manchester United a massive favour in the race for the top four.

Villa faced Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, with the Reds trying to chase down Newcastle and United after winning seven games on the bounce.

But Villa ended Liverpool’s winning run as they held them to a 1-1 draw, meaning United only need one point from their final two games to secure Champions League football for next season.

Gary Neville had admitted earlier this week on Monday Night Football that the ‘unthinkable’ could happen, with Liverpool potentially finishing above United despite trailing them in the table for the majority of the season. That now looks very unlikely, and Young joked about helping out his old club on social media.

‘Nothing like a plan coming together, OOPS @GNev2,’ Young tweeted.

Young spent eight-and-a-half years at United between 2011 and 2020, and evidently still has a soft spot for the Red Devils.

During this time, Young won the Premier League, Europa League and both domestic cups before moving onto Inter Milan and then back to Villa.

While Liverpool could only draw with Villa, United beat Bournemouth 1-0 thanks to an acrobatic volley from Casemiro on Saturday afternoon.

They now look set to finish in the top four as they host Chelsea and Fulham over the next seven days.

Erik ten Hag’s men only need a draw from one of these games, and will be expected to achieve this having not lost a league game at Old Trafford since the opening day of the season.

Young’s Villa also have something to play for on the final day when they face Brighton at Villa Park.

The Midlands club are currently seventh in the table, and may need a victory to hold onto a European spot ahead of Tottenham and Brentford.
