At least 1 person is killed after equipment explodes at a Proctor and Gamble plant

  • Explosion took place at Proctor and Gamble factory in Pineville, Louisiana
  • The equipment driver was killed in the explosion early Thursday morning
  • A company spokesperson said it’s first fatal accident at plant in 49 years
  • Workers were sent home while authorities investigate cause of the accident 

At least one person is dead after an equipment explosion occurred at the Proctor and Gamble plant in central Louisiana that produces detergent Tide Pods.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office confirms the equipment’s driver was killed Thursday morning inside the plant in Pineville. 

Spokeswoman Ashley Rodrigue says the fire was contained to the equipment but further details about the type of equipment weren’t immediately released. 

No other injuries were reported.

The incident happened around 3am.

P&G plant manager Frank Blumling, in a statement, also confirmed the accident and death, noting an investigation is underway. 

Blumling says it’s the first fatal accident in the plant’s 49-year history. He says the plant has been shut down and workers sent home.

One of the area’s largest employers, the facility produces liquid and dry detergent and Tide Pods.

‘We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the P&G Product Supply Family passed away at our Alexandria manufacturing facility in a tragic accident during the early morning hours of May 24, 2018,’ the company said in a statement to KALB-TV.

‘The safety of our employees is a top priority, and there is an investigation underway at this time. 

‘We are connected with the employee’s family and have expressed our deepest condolences. 

‘We will support them and all our Alexandria employees in this difficult time.’
