At least 14 people were reported dead when a passenger jet crashed after takeoff from an airport in Kazakhstan on Friday.

Bek Air flight Z2100 with 100 on board went down shortly after take off from the airport in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, Friday morning.

The Fokker 100 jet had left Almaty at 7.05am local time and was to arrive in the country’s capital of Nursultan by 8:40am.

According to Kazakhstan’s civil aviation agency, the jet ‘lost altitude during takeoff and broke through a concrete fence’, before hitting a building, reports Aljazeera. 

Kazakh state media, citing the Internal Affairs Ministry, said at least nine people had been killed in the crash, and nine people, including six children, had been injured.  

Footage of the crash scene show the fuselage partially broken up in the ruins of the building that was struck. 

People can be heard calling for help in videos of the crash site posted online. 

Some of the footage also shows what appear to be bodies in the wreckage.

Emergency service personnel have rushed to the scene to search through the rubble for survivors. 

Kazakhstan aviation authorities reportedly had grounded all Fokker 100 jets following the deadly crash.

The Almaty International Airport said a special commission is investigating the circumstances leading to the deadly incident.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his condolences to the friends and families of those killed in the crash, in a social medial post.

‘All those injured will be rendered assistance. All those responsible will carry severe punishment in accordance with the law,’ Kaz Inform news agency quoted the president as saying in the Kazakh language.
