Atlanta Braves announcer makes ‘Hawk Tuah’ joke on-air after Cardinals player spits on his own shoulder

The Hawk Tuah trend has made its way to the commentary box. 

An Atlanta Braves announcer referenced the now-viral meme on Wednesday night when the team took on the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. 

During the second inning, the Braves’ commentators were discussing some saliva that slipped out of Alec Burleson’s mouth.

‘As he was sitting there he went to spit,’ one of the announcers began. 

‘A little humid out, I guess, and mouth getting a little bit dry, didn’t quite clear his arm and just landed right on the shoulder,’ he went on, referencing the saliva landing on the St. Louis outfielder’s arm.

In response, the other broadcaster quipped, ‘hawk tuah.’ 

It wasn’t the first time the NSFW trend – which originated on TikTok during a street interview with Haliey Welch – has been referenced in the MLB. 

Bryce Harper made headlines last week after footage showed him making a fist and spitting on it, complete with the phrase ‘hawk tuah.’ 

Philadelphia’s star slugger, who is married, has two children and is expecting a third with his wife, was paying tribute to Welch amid her overnight social media fame.

In the original clip, she was being interviewed on the street in Nashville, where she was asked how she gets over a break-up. 

‘The only way to get over one is to get under another,’ she quipped. 

The interviewer then asked about her ‘one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time.’ 

Welch’s NSFW response almost immediately made social media lose its collective mind.
