Australia has a new world champion after Skye Nicolson claimed a unanimous decision victory over Sarah Mahfoud in their WBC featherweight title fight in Las Vegas.

The 28-year-old put on a clinic from start to finish, winning every round on two judges score cards and dropping just one round on the the third’s card.

The win keeps her spotless 10-0 record intact and sets up a potential match-up with big-named Amanda Serrano down the track.

‘I know what I can do, and I want to keep proving that to the rest of the world,’ Nicolson said in her post-fight interview.

Nicolson’s jab kept Mahfoud busy all night, and prevented the Dane from landing any truly damaging shots.

When Mahfoud did get inside, the Aussie’s footwork and quick hands kept her out of any trouble.

Nicolson grew in confidence over the second stanza of the fight, and pressed forward with solid left straights.

‘I knew [I would win] before I got in the ring,’ Nicolson said.

‘She was awkward, she breaks the space very well, so I found myself falling in a little bit when I was trying to attack, but I knew what I had to do to win and that’s what I did.

‘My team and I said we just need to double up those attacks a little bit because she was breaking the space, but apart from that, they told me to just keep doing what I was doing and just add a little bit more.’

Serrano, who holds the rest of the belts in the featherweight division, has insisted on her future fights being 12 three-minute round affairs, rather than the WBC’s 10 2-minute rounds.

Nicolson seems happy to fight under these rules.

‘I’m ready when she’s ready,’ Nicolson said.

‘Obviously I want the belts, so it’s nothing personal, Amanda, but I’m ready when you are.

‘I find it funny that she waited until I was her mandatory to decide that’s what she wanted to do but look, I respect the WBC’s rules, that’s why I’m still boxing for the WBC belt.

‘But if the only way to fight the Meta Serrano is over 12 three-minute rounds, talk to my team, we’ll make it happen.’
