Aussie cricket great turned TV identity Michael Slater is hit with fresh domestic violence charges as fallen star remains behind bars

Michael Slater’s sad fall from grace has been hit by a new twist after the former cricket star was hit with fresh domestic violence charges.

It comes as Slater, 54, remains behind bars at one of Brisbane’s most infamous watchhouses after being refused bail.

The former Australian opening batter’s case was heard in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday where he faces domestic violence charges stemming from a litany of alleged incidents on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Court documents tendered during Slater’s bail application on April 16 state the 54-year-old allegedly assaulted and choked a woman who checked on his welfare at his Noosa Heads home on December 6 last year.

Police allege Slater broke into a woman’s home on April 12 before he accosted her.

Slater was also charged with stalking after he allegedly sent about 300 messages calling the woman an ‘escort’ and a ‘slut’ before threatening suicide through voicemail.

He was charged with more than a dozen offences including assault occasioning bodily harm, choking and strangulation, common assault, entering dwelling at night by break, unlawful stalking and breaching bail conditions.

The court heard that Slater denied the allegations of violence and would defend them.

It comes as Slater, 54, remains behind bars at one of Brisbane ‘s most infamous jails at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre

According to News Corp, defence lawyer Troy Krahenbring appeared by phone in court on Friday and requested a full brief of evidence. 

Slater wasn’t required to be in court.

The court heard Slater had been charged with two additional offences from December 10, 2023 and March 13 this year, meaning he is facing a total of 25 charges.

Police prosecutor Jeanette Grigoris confirmed the fresh charges were in relation to an alleged choking offence and common assault.

The court was told Slater was currently at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in Brisbane’s southwestern suburb of Darra.

Legal Aid solicitor Michael Robinson stated in April his client planned to reside in a rehab facility in Sydney if released from custody.

‘There’s documented evidence in front of the court that shows he’ll be out of the court’s jurisdiction, in a mental rehab facility, basically doing something about addressing the (alleged) behaviour,’ Robinson said.

Bail was refused in April by magistrate Raelene Ellis after police alleged Slaterhit a woman at his Noosa Heads home, after she attended the residence over concerns for his welfare.

Police allege Slater then choked her in the laundry as she attempted to get away.

It is further alleged Slater threatened to kill her while wielding an empty vodka bottle.

On Friday, Magistrate Patricia Kirkman-Scroope adjourned Slater’s latest matters to July 19.
