Aussie cricket legend Adam Gilchrist rushes to set the record straight after being caught up in an online scam

  • Quote online questioned performances of Pakistan in Test series
  • Was defamatory, and attributed to Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist
  • The 52-year-old labelled the explosive comment ‘absolutely fake’

Australian cricket great Adam Gilchrist has set the record straight after an online troll fabricated a highly inflammatory quote and attributed it to him.

A graphic was posted on a Pakistani cricket supporters Facebook page that accused the 52-year-old of stating: ‘Pakistan [is] the worst Asian team in Australian conditions, what have they won here in the last 35 years?’

It follows the tourists’ recent 3-0 Test series defeat at the hands of Pat Cummins’ men.

The Facebook group member who found the fake graphic went onto passionately defend Pakistan.

‘I know Pak performance is not up to the mark in Australia,’ the supporter said.

‘For Adam’s knowledge, Pakistan won ’92 WC [World Cup] in Australia. We played WC T20 2022 final there too.’

A bemused Gilchrist was soon notified of the quote – and was quick to clarify the matter.

‘I never said this. Absolutely fake, it is a made up quote,’ he said of the explosive attribution.

‘Pakistan were excellent at times this summer, against a world champion Australian team….and they very nearly pinched a Test or two.’

Gilchrist played 96 Tests and 287 ODIs for Australia during his decorated 13-year international career and is widely regarded as the world’s best ever wicket-keeper batsman.

He then made a seamless transition to the commentary box after retiring from international cricket in 2008.

Speaking on SEN Radio last November, Gilchrist slammed world cricket’s non-stop scheduling of fixtures.

‘We’ve got a T20 series [in India] just four days after a ODI World Cup. That’s just greed and filling the coffers, that’s really all that is,’ he said.

He also believes all three format of the sport can continue to co-exist, but is concerned players from some nations may be enticed to the huge money on offer in the Indian Premier League.

‘I think there’s enough room — just don’t play too much of any of them,’ he said.
