An Australian soldier has travelled 13,000km from home to fight in the war in Ukraine, saying he hopes to ‘inspire’ more people from around the world to join the battle against Russia’s invasion.

Footage taken on the front line in Ukraine’s Sievierodonetsk showed a group of troops known as the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, a military unit of foreigners helping the resistance against Russia, armed with weapons.

A path of destruction was seen as they drove through the war-torn streets, and what appeared to be Australian bushmasters lying on their sides, destroyed.

As the unit stop to regroup on a patch of grass, explosions are heard in the distance.

The unidentified Australian soldier said it was amazing to see so many foreigners like himself joining the fight in Ukraine.

‘I think since coming here it’s been amazing how many people from all around the world have come together to help out a country in need,’ he said in a Radio Svoboda television report.

‘I feel like it’s really, really inspirational to have a lot of these guys with previous experience to actually lend their hand and step up and volunteer.

‘I’m from Australia, it’s quite far away, quite hard to get here, even I stepped up so hopefully I inspire more people to come here and do the same thing.’

Australians have repeatedly been warned by the government not to travel to Ukraine.

Defence Minister Richard Marles told reporters on Sunday he wasn’t aware of the interview with the Australian soldier.

‘Our message is that Australians should not be participating in foreign conflicts,’ Mr Marles said.

Footage also showed one soldier with blood splashed across his face while driving in a military vehicle.

Also seen in the video was a 22-year-old ‘kid’ from Georgia, who said he felt like he doing the ‘right thing’.

‘We’re going to push Russians back, it’s going to take a day, a month or year it doesn’t f**king matter,’ he said.

‘We are on the right side of history, we’re going to make sure all of us are going to get back home with our families and make sure occupants are not going to do the same.’
