Aussie shopper wows after turning a $20 Kmart maternity top into the perfect summer dress

Stylish shopper snaps up the ‘perfect’ summer dress from an unlikely section in Kmart – and now everyone wants one for themselves

  • A shopper bought a maternity top from Kmart thinking it was a summer dress
  • The Melbourne woman found the $20 ‘dress’ away from the maternity aisle
  • Thinking it was a child’s dress she picked up a size 16 as she fits an adult 8-10
  • But when she got home she saw the same top online advertised as maternity
  • She was unconcerned, still loves her ‘dress’ and shared the find to Facebook

An Australian shopper found herself the perfect summer dress during a trip to Kmart but didn’t realise until she got home that it was actually a maternity top.

The Melbourne style lover spotted the $20 ‘dress’ discarded by another customer away from the maternity section and, thinking it was ‘cute’, picked it up for herself.

It wasn’t until she got home that she realised it was maternity wear but was unconcerned and shared her find in a post to popular Facebook group Kmart Home Hacks & Decor.

But, when she got home she saw the 'dress' being advertised online as a maternity top. She still loves her dress despite the label

A Melbourne shopper (left) was surprised to learn her new $20 summer ‘dress’ from Kmart was actually meant to be a maternity top (right)

‘Found this in a random aisle thinking it was a cute dress, took it home and realised it’s a maternity top. Super comfy and breathable material,’ she wrote in the post.

She had bought the budget retailer’s Maternity Sleeveless Shirred Bodice Top with a ‘Mush ging’ print and tie straps.

Group members were impressed by her ‘adorable’ makeshift summer ‘dress’ and told the woman to ‘ignore the label’ if she loved the outfit.

‘I wouldn’t have known it was maternity dress if you hadn’t said. You looked perfect and quite comfy in it. Don’t care what the tag says as long as you love it,’ one woman said.

‘I have this dress too! I didn’t realise it was maternity,’ a second wrote.

One woman asked why she didn’t notice the garment was a maternity top while others were concerned it would be too short.

‘There was no tag on it. I realised it was maternity when ads popped up on my Facebook feed,’ the Kmart customer replied.

She added she bought a size 16 thinking it was for children and normally wears a AU8-10 so the top was long enough to look like a dress on her.

Some users admitted to unknowingly shopping in the maternity aisle as well.

‘My sister and I would always accidentally end up in the maternity sections of stores, admiring everything and then realising it was all maternity,’ one woman laughed.

‘I’ve done this previously… just don’t get offended when people ask when you’re due,’ another joked.

‘My most favourite skirt is a Kmart maternity one that I had no idea was maternity,’ said a third.
