Aussie singer diagnosed with rare disease: ‘I’m processing the trauma and taking things slowly’

Aussie musician Gretta Ray has been diagnosed with the rare heart disease infective endocarditis, forcing her to cancel all shows she scheduled for the year.

The indie pop singer, 26, who hails from Melbourne, took to Instagram on Tuesday with an update for her fans after she suddenly disappeared from social media.

Recovering from her shock illness in London, Gretta said her infection overcame her body ‘suddenly and frighteningly’ with ‘distressing repercussions’ to her health.

The music artist, who won Triple J Unearthed in 2016, explained she was ‘lucky’ doctors discovered the disease so early when she began noticing symptoms.

‘I was then transferred to a second hospital, one that is famous for dealing with this particular disease,’ she revealed.

Gretta went on to say she has ‘cancelled all shows I planned for the remainder of the year to allow me the best chance of making a full recovery’.

After finishing up a long course of intravenous antibiotics, Gretta was discharged from hospital two week ago but will likely require surgery in the future.

‘Due to the fact that I am stable, the doctors have encouraged me to spend time regaining some strength and immunity outside of hospital,’ she wrote.

‘While I’m still dealing with some complications, it’s already been healing being back out in the world,’ she continued.

‘I know I will be telling this story in more detail when the time is right but for now I’m processing the trauma and taking things slowly.’

Gretta went on to thank all her fans for their ‘kind and thoughtful messages’ before poking fun at her situation.

She referenced one of her breakout songs titled Heartbreak Baby, and said it was ironic she now has ‘a physically broken heart’.

According to the Mayo Clinic, infective endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the endocardium lining of the heart’s chambers and valve.

It is caused by an infection when bacteria, fungi or other germs enter the bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in the heart.

Without timely treatment, the rare disease has been known to damage or destroy the heart valves.
