Aussies are ditching their dreams of brick and mortar in suburbia and buying a portable tiny home instead. Here’s a look at what $75,000 gets you

More young Australians are considering living in a tiny house to break the crushing rent cycle and save money, according to two business owners.

Alison and Ben Metcalf, 41 and 44, are the proud founders of Tiny Tect Tiny Houses on the Sunshine Coast, which launched two years ago.

Due to the rising cost of living across the country, the married couple have noticed a spike in inquiries from young Aussies looking for alternative methods of housing.

The pair told FEMAIL tiny houses could act as a ‘stepping stone’ that could lead to larger financial endeavours.

‘Tiny houses provide so much freedom – you’re not tied down to a crippling mortgage and you regain time lost building a home or looking one to buy,’ Ben said.

‘We’ve noticed young couples buying tiny houses to live on their parents’ property to save money.’

Prices for tiny houses start at $75,000 – the price of a home deposit in some states – which is another benefit for buyers.

‘People like knowing they own the whole asset rather than renting or taking decades to pay off a mortgage,’ Ben said.

‘Not only are tiny houses cheaper but they take less time to build and the bring those living in it closer together. Customers tend to reconnect with the outdoors through gardening or soaking up the sun.’

At the moment the couple believe tiny house living is only at the beginning that will likely grow in the next few years.

However, the downsides include the large lump sum required up front to buy the tiny home and the need for land to put the home on.

‘Every council has different rules and restrictions regarding locations for tiny homes, and some are more lenient that others,’ Alison said.

It’s two storey with a ceiling height of 4.25m and can comfortably sleep four adults and two children.

Inside is a spacious kitchen with an oven and four burner cooktop, cosy dining nook, working bathroom, main bedroom, workspace and relax area.

The smallest tiny home named ‘Om’ is 4.2m long and 2.4m wide with a ceiling height of 3.4m. This comfortably sleeps two adults and could ideally be used as an AirBnb.

Each build takes between two to three months to complete – a start contrast to the development of a regular home, which can usually take up to 24 months.

Tiny Tect houses have also caught the attention of single mums, elderly customers and investors.

A few years ago the couple and their two daughters gave up their suburban life to live in a caravan for eight months. Over this time they realised just how little you truly need live a fulfilling lifestyle.

‘We gave it a go and fell in love with small living,’ Alison said.

So they turned their sights to helping other people live a similar lifestyle by designing and developing tiny houses – and they haven’t looked back since.

‘We adore seeing the happiness on people’s faces and how empowered it makes them feel. It’s really life-changing,’ she added.

Ben and Alison’s biggest piece of advice to curious customers is to ‘try before you buy’ to see if tiny living is right for you – but also don’t be afraid to take the leap.

‘The devil is in the detail when it comes to tiny houses, so we need to ensure we do everything correct and not cut any corners,’ Ben said.
