With Australia Day fast approaching, here is a handy guide to the opening hours of some of the country’s largest and best loved retailers.

Coles

The major supermarket chain will operate as normal on January 26, apart from in South Australia, where stores in only the following locations will be open: Berri, Mount Barker, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge Green, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Rundle Place, Victor Harbour and Whyalla.

Coles has advised customers to check with their local store or on the company’s website, as there may be slight differences in trading hours between stores.

Woolworths 

All Woolworths stores will be open in Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT, with a small number of exceptions to regular trading hours in other states.

In Victoria, every Woolies will be open except Bourke St and Collins Square on Thursday, while the North Sydney and Eastlakes Metro stores will be closed, but all others open in NSW.

Esperance is the only store set to be closed in Western Australia on Australia Day, but Woolworths has warned that stores in the west will operate on public holiday trading hours rather than their normal times.

Dan Murphy’s

If the thought of running out of beer on Austraila Day sparks dread, rest assured Dan Murphy’s will be open for trading on the public holiday.

As with most major outlets however, shoppers are urged to check opening hours of their local outlet as hours may vary between stores. 

Bunnings Warehouse 

Planning to get stuck into that home maintenance project on the public holiday? The good news is all Bunnings stores will be open on January 26.

Opening hours will vary nationally so customers are advised to check the Bunnings Warehouse website for details of their local store.

Chemist Warehouse

Most Chemist Warehouse stores will be open at regular hours on Thursday, but customers have been advised to check in with their local branch over the phone or online, particularly those located inside shopping centres, which may be closed for the public holiday.

Kmart

Good news for Kmart lovers – stores will be open nationally on January 26, with some exceptions in Western Australia and South Australia.

Customers are advised to check their local store’s trading hours, as they may have been altered for the public holiday.

Stores will be shut at Esperance in WA, and Churchill, Firle, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, Marion, Munno Para, Port Noarlunga, Tea Tree and Westlakes in SA.

JB Hi-Fi

Anyone needing a replacement speaker or a HDMI chord on short notice will be in luck on Australia Day, with JB Hi-Fi stores open nationwide. 

Shoppers can check for exceptions in shopping centres and in parts of South Australia and Western Australia via the store’s website.
