Australian child sex offender dies in Cambodian prison

An Australian man who was convicted of child sex offences and sentenced to eight years behind bars has reportedly died in a Cambodian jail.

Giuseppe Nicolosi had been serving time in the infamous Prey Sar prison, near the outskirts of Phnom Penh, when he was pronounced dead on Monday, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The 61-year-old was arrested and charged in 2010 over the alleged raped of a four-year-old girl in Siem Reap, in Cambodia’s north.

Consular assistance was being provided to the family of an unidentified Australian man who died in Cambodia, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman told the paper.

Nicolosi had fronted Siem Reap’s Provincial Court, with the four-year-old alleged victim and an eight-year-old witness giving testimony, The Vancouver Sun reported.

His case was later brought to the Court of Appeal in 2013, with the judge upholding the eight-year sentence.

The 61-year-old’s lawyer, Kao Soupha, said at the time that it was ‘not the right decision’ and they would be taking the matter to the supreme court, according to the Phnom Penh Post.

A second Australian, James Ricketson, is also believed to be in declining health at the same prison, which is renowned as one of Cambodia’s harshest jails.

The 67-year-old is accused of being an ‘important spy’, despite his claims of innocence.
