A world-first motorcycle rating system that could potentially save the lives of millions of riders has been launched by an Australian university.
The Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP) is a method of testing and rating protective clothing so riders can make more informed garment choices.
The decision to launch the program, which is being conducted at Deakin University, came as a result of the high rates of accidents and deaths of motorcyclists.

Until now, riders had very limited information about the best products to protect them from injury if they crashed, but the new system aims to solve this problem.
According to the MotoCAP website, products are tested on impact protection, burst resistance, abrasion resistance, comfort, thermal control, and water protection.
The test results are then weighed to emphasis the need for greater protection in specific ‘high risk’ areas where there is a greater chance of injury.
Products such as leather jackets are given two separate star ratings as a result of the rigorous testing process: one for protection and one for comfort.
Riders can then access these results on the MotoCAP website, which will hopefully improve effectiveness of protective garments and reduce injuries or even death.
Transport Accident Commission senior road safety specialist David Young told The Herald Sun the rating system will make it easier for riders to choose the right gear.

‘There are plenty of options out there for safe and affordable protective clothing and MotoCAP makes it easier for riders to balance the sometimes conflicting needs of personal protection and comfort,’ he said.
So far this year, 192 riders have been killed on Australian roads compared to this time last year (231).
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan welcomes the new rating system, saying too many riders are still being seriously injured on the roads.
‘Wearing the best protective gear possible can make a significant difference,’ he said.
‘That’s why we’re giving our motorcycle community the information they need to dress as safely as possible when riding.’
