When a ‘strange, creepy’ noise echoed across a river in a desolate regional Victorian town, Jai Brooks immediately pulled out his phone to film.
The 44-year-old and his family were in Bonnie Doon cleaning out their old cabin in a caravan park after deciding to sell it.
‘We had pretty much finished all the work and were killing some time before going to the pub for dinner. So my two brothers and I decided to go down and have a look at the water,’ Jai told FEMAIL.
‘We had only been there a few minutes when one of my brothers said, ‘Can you hear that?”
A confronting, eerie sound seemingly coming from the nearby hillside started getting progressively louder, spooking the four family members.
While looking at each other with confused looks, Jai whipped out his phone to record the noise and shared the footage on TikTok, which has since captured the attention of thousands.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology could not provide a comment or advice on the questionable sound and it remains a mystery. Some believe it’s echoing from a tunnel far away while others think it’s a jet noise ‘bouncing off the water’.
Others have accused Jai of dubbing a sound over the top of the video.
Aussie driver Jair Brooks recorded a strange noise that echoed over a river in Bonnie Doon, Victoria, 165km north-east of Melbourne
The confronting, eerie sound seemingly coming from the nearby hillside started getting progressively louder, spooking the four family member
‘At first it sounded like it was coming from across the lake where the hills are. But as it got louder we couldn’t tell because it was all around us,’ Jai said.
‘To be honest none of us had or have any idea what the sound was. We have been up there many times over the years and have never heard anything like it.
‘It probably lasted about 2 minutes all together.’
The video itself is quite astonishing to hear as Jai, his two brothers and mum stand on the waters edge looking stunned.
‘What the f*** is that sound? You can hear that right?’ Jai said in the one-minute video and turns to his mum to check she can hear it too.
‘What is it?’ she asked, and Jai replied: ‘I have no idea. I can’t see anything but I can certainly hear that. It’s aliens?’
After sharing the video, hundreds shared their thoughts on what the sound could be.
‘Is it a jet noise bouncing from the water? pretty spooky,’ one suggested, another added: ‘Is there a bridge or tunnel? Traffic?’
A third left a specific comment and wrote: ‘It’s the result of mega frequency waves aimed at our ionosphere. There’s 144,000 Christmas tree antennas that act as an array at Murchison, WA’.
Regardless, others were spooked.
‘If I heard this sound I wouldn’t stick around to find out,’ one admitted.
‘Seen quite a few of these videos the last couple of weeks and not just in Australia,’ another said.
‘To be honest none of us had or have any idea what the sound was. We have been up there many times over the years and have never heard anything like it,’ Jai said
The town of Bonnie Doon has a population of about 2,880 people and the caravan park itself was deserted, so the idea that the sound came from traffic, a nearby tunnel or a jet plane was highly unlikely.
Jai said he and his family weren’t afraid per se, but admitted they should’ve been. They still have no idea what it was.
‘We were more in disbelief and confused. At the time we were the only ones up there so we could not see if anyone else was reacting,’ he added.
‘We did Google it later on but all we could find was there have been strange sounds that have been heard all over the world for quite some time.’
