A grandfather from Perth could lose his arm following a horror accident in Bali that left him with cuts so bad that he lost almost half of the blood in his body.

Phil McElhinney had rushed to the scene of a motorbike accident before chasing a driver who was attempting to flee only to end up laying in a pool of his own blood.   

Mr McElhinney chased the man into a shop but ran into a glass door which shattered, lacerating his hands and arms.

Mr McElhinney now faces the possibility of losing an arm, but doctors said he very lucky as the blood loss alone should have killed him.  

The Sorrento grandfather told 7NEWS: ‘I ran through the door and the door was shut, one hand hit the wood and the other went through the window,’ as he recovered in a Bali hospital.  

He said doctors had talked about cutting the arm off because the damage was so severe.

A friend of Mr McElhinney, Warren, witnessed the freak accident and told of how he saw his friend collapse on the ground after hearing screams.

He said: ‘He had lost a lot of blood, his artery had been severed and he was bleeding out quite quickly’.  

Mr McElhinney has undergone surgery for his injuries but faces colossal medical bills having regrettably failed to take out travel insurance
