Australian Idol fans left furious as Dylan Wright beats Amy Reeves and is crowned the winner of the singing competition: ‘She was robbed’

Dylan Wright was crowned winner of Australian Idol 2024 during Monday night’s nail-biting finale, beating West Australian Amy Reeves and Queenslander Denvah Baker-Moller.

The Bangalow-native was stunned by the life-changing news and almost broke down in tears.

But many fans of the Channel Seven revamp of the singing show are furious with the outcome and believe Amy should have taken home the top prize.

Several viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment with the finale results.

‘Call the police! A robbery has taken place on Australian Idol. Amy has been absolutely shafted. Easily the best performer in idol history,’ wrote one.

Many more echoed the opinion Amy was the rightful winner: ‘I don’t have words. Amy has been robbed.’

‘What?! Dylan won! He has a sweet voice, not a great voice. Amy was robbed,’ another read.

‘Shocked Amy didn’t win. Thought she was the best singing show contestant in some time,’ another Idol fan said.

Meanwhile, other disappointed fans were hopeful for Amy’s future career, citing previous examples of runners-up of the show.

‘Usually the one who didn’t win becomes bigger than the winner, hope it happens to Amy,’ wrote one.

Another brought up the example of Jessica Mauboy, who was runner up in her season of Australian Idol and is now touring the nation.

‘The guy who won I believe hosts community radio. You’ll be a okay,’ the Amy fan wrote.

During Monday night’s finale, Dylan became emotional when he took home the crown.

‘Thank you. I don’t know. I’m about to cry! So, thanks!’ he told the studio audience and judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark.

Dylan walked away with a $100,000 cash prize and a recording contract with Sony Music Australia, following the record public vote.

At the end of the show he performed his winner’s single, Paper Heart, to rapturous applause.

Prior to the announcement, Sandilands said that both Dylan and Amy would have bright futures.

‘As judges, what we want is to deliver up the best that we have found,’ he said.

‘Both of these two I would be pleased to manage, to sign. They both have amazing records. Couldn’t be happier. They are both just fantastic’.
