Australian national, 27, dies while on holiday in Thailand after collapsing in his Pattaya hotel room

A 27-year-old Australian man has been found dead in his hotel room in a popular Thai tourist city.

Thai police said the unidentified man collapsed in a room on the fourth floor of a Pattaya hotel, in the presence of his allegedly heavily intoxicated male friend on Wednesday.

First responders were called to the room by hotel staff and arrived to find the man laying dead on his back on the floor wearing only a pair of shorts and a fanny pack, local outlets report.

Police allege they found ketamine, cannabis and drug paraphernalia in the room, on top of a table, which were seized as evidence.

The 27-year-old’s friend was reportedly found in a confused and frantic state.

Emergency workers provided first aid to the friend before rushing him to hospital for treatment for a possible drug overdose.

Hotel staff told police they heard loud noises emanating from the room, before alerting police and checking for the source.

Police said the man was then shouting to staff that his friend was unresponsive and wouldn’t wake up.

Police took the evidence from the room and reportedly focused their initial investigations on whether the 27-year-old may have overdosed on ketamine.

His friend will be subject to interviews and questioning as soon as he recovers from his alleged intoxication, as Thai detectives continue to gather details and establish a precise cause of death.

Though Marijuana has been decriminalised in Thailand, ketamine is classified as a schedule two illegal drug, and anyone found with it could be charged with possession.

Penalties for the possession and use of a schedule two substance in Thailand can include imprisonment of one to five years and fines ranging from about $1000 to $4500.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Daily Mail Australia they’re assisting a man in the country.

‘The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to an Australian man in Thailand. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment,’ a spokesperson said.
