Australian opera singer Jacqueline Dark dies aged 55 – as her cause of death is revealed 

Australian Opera and cabaret singer Jacqueline Dark has died at the age of 55.

The award winning singer, who died in hospital in Sydney on Tuesday night according to the ABC, was a beloved theatre star known for her generous spirits on and off stage.

Dark appeared in the TV show So You Think You Can Dance, and was a guest panellist on music quiz show Spicks and Specks.

She performed around the globe with  many of Australia’s leading orchestras and choirs and in Australia including with Opera Australia, Victorian Opera and Pinchgut Opera.

Over her career Jacqueline has won many awards, including two Green Room Awards and a Helpmann Award.

‘Whenever she came into ABC Classic for an interview, we always ended up laughing so much. And as an artist, she was brave, just as happy singing cabaret or with electronic musicians as she was tackling Wagner,’ said ABC Classic Drive presenter Russell Torrance.

Tributes from the musical theatre community also started appearing on social media.

‘Her irrepressible humour and life and energy and musicality made her one of the greatest of Australian mezzos,’ said Erin Helyard, artistic director of Pinchgut Opera.
