Australian tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios has shut down spectators who attempted to heckle him during a recent training session.

Kyrgios, wearing a Kyrie Irving NBA jersey on a back court at the Citi Open Tennis Tournament in Washington, was targeted from behind the fence.

‘Kyrie is a bum,’ one heckler said as his friend burst into laughter.

Kyrgios immediately turned and asked the heckler to repeat himself.

The taunter told him he was referring to Kyrgios’ shirt and repeated the ‘bum’ slur.

‘So what does that make you?’ Kyrgios responded.

Kyrgios later paused his training session to continue the conversation.

‘I wish I could just wake up and criticise other people,’ Kyrgios said to the man.

The exchange continued when Kyrgios asked the spectator what he was hoping to achieve with his comment.

‘I’ll try to explain it, why do you think I care if you said that?’ Kyrgios asked him.

Kyrgios told the fan he didn’t understand how a remark about an NBA player would have any impact on him.

Eventually the heckler offered a half-hearted apology.

‘Sorry if you didn’t take it as a joke,’ the heckler said.

‘Ok cool,’ Kyrgios responded.

The video surfaced only a day after the Aussie star regained form, defeating Russian player Daniil Medvedev to win the Citi Open at Rock Creek Tennis Center.

During the post-match he spoke openly about any changes he had made prior to winning the open.

‘I just wanted to clean myself up and have healthier habits,’ Kyrgios said, using his fingers to signal quotation marks around ‘clean.’

‘It’s only the beginning,’ he added, ‘and it showed this week by winning this tournament.’

He spoke over and over about how proud he was – not so much about the way he played tennis to earn a trophy, but the way he lived his life when he wasn’t playing.

‘I had the same routine every day. And I just felt – I felt actually like a traditional tennis player this week,’ Kyrgios said.

‘I feel like I’ve made major strides, I’m just going to take it one day at a time and hopefully I can continue on this new path.’

Kyrgios said he knew it was time for him to address a few issues he had on and off the court in order to improve even more as a top tier player.

‘I just had a lot of unhealthy habits and it was starting to show on the tennis court … it wasn’t healthy, so I just needed to change a lot of things,’ he said.
