Wiranata was arrested on Monday and was shot in the leg when he allegedly resisted police, 7 News reported.

The man was paraded through the streets by police during a press conference.

The 25-year-old allegedly robbed Ms Leal because he was trying to pay off hospital bills for the birth of his child.

Wiranata stole her mobile phone and credit cards before fleeing on his motorbike, police allege.

Denpasar police chief, Ruddi Setiawan warned that anyone breaking the law was at risk of being shot.

‘I warn all prospective perpetrators, to those who perpetrate street crime to foreign tourists, I as Denpasar police chief, will not hesitate to take firm action. I will shoot. You resist, I will shoot you to kill. You resist, I will shoot your leg,’ Ruddi said.

‘On facing Christmas and New Year holiday season we will take firm action on street crime.’

A friend of Ms Leal shared his concerns on Facebook after the attack and issued a warning to other tourists.

‘(The accused) tried to pull her handbag but it was tied to the mirror and he couldn’t take it easily, then he took the knife and stabbed her six times,’ David Iglesias Megias said.

‘He finally took the handbag and ran away leaving the knife and his sandals.

‘She is badly injured and the wounds are really deep. She is in the hospital and needs surgery.’

A cover for the machete and a bloodied sandle was found after the alleged attack.

Wiranata could face nine years behind bars.
