An Australian washing machine repairman shocked hundreds with a list of six common mistakes people make that could be destroying their appliances.

Samuel Thompson, a repairman, shared a picture of a machine with a build up of grime on the inside and explained that a series of user errors are responsible for the issue.

Samuel advised against several everyday habits, including using fabric softener or poor quality detergent and always washing on a cold wash.

Samuel warned washing machine owners that the grime is very common, particularly in front loading machines.

‘Just for all the front loader owners, I see this level of grime near daily, whilst many will not be this bad, most will be,’ he said.

Do you make any of these common mistakes?

He explained that a build up can cause your clothes to stain when getting washed as grime is entering the drum.

‘There is no simple or easy way to completely clean the grime out of a front loader, top loaders can quite easily be taken apart and scrubbed and cleaned,’ the expert warned.

To avoid the difficult issue, Samuel recommends changing your washing machine habits.

Samuel said there are ‘varying factors’ that can make the grime better or worse, but he listed the main causes to educate owners.

Six washing machine mistakes you should never make:

1. Using fabric softener

2. Using poor quality detergent

3. Using too much detergent

4. Constantly washing clothes in cold washes

5. Not doing the bowl or tub clean when the machine prompts you

6. Not cleaning the dispenser tray regularly

The number one thing he advises against is using fabric softener, which he calls the ‘devil’.

The solution can leave behind residue and cause a build up in the machine, which may eventually result in mould.

He said poor quality detergent can have the same effect and eventually cause your machine to malfunction.

The repairman recommended Radiant or Omo, which can both be purchased in most supermarkets.

Front loading washing machines can also be destroyed by using too much detergent. Using an excessive amount of detergent produces more suds and requires the machine to work extra hard to remove the suds.

One of Samuel’s tips that surprised several people is that you shouldn’t do ‘constant cold washes’.

Although washing with cold water is better for your clothes and energy bill, it doesn’t kill bacteria which could build up in the drum.

The repairman recommends doing ‘at least’ one hot cycle a week to keep the machine running smoothly.

Another common mistake is not cleaning the dispenser tray regularly, build up of detergent or softener in the tray can cause mould, if it’s not cleaned regularly the mould will mix with the clothes that are washing.

Samuel’s final tip is to always do the bowl or tub clean when the machine prompts you.

The expert explained that most good machines will have a timer or counter programmed, but if yours doesn’t he advised setting a reminder in your phone to do a clean at least once every three months.
