Avengers: Infinity War rakes in $39million on Thursday night, smashing superhero box-office records

It was expected to be a hit even before the numbers began rolling in.

But Avengers: Infinity War has already set a variety of records, even before it officially hits theaters Friday.

The third edition of the epic comic collaboration grossed $39million in Thursday night previews, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But how: Avengers: Infinity War has already set a variety of records, even before it officially hits theaters Friday

That’s over $8million more than the previous superhero record holder, The Dark Knight, which pulled in an impressive $30.6million during its Thursday night reveal back in 2008.

Disney and Marvel have already had an impressive year, with Black Panther pulling in an admirable $25.2million in previews back in February.

Neither, however, can hold a flame to the current chart champion.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still the top preview grossing film of all time, pulling in $57million back in 2015, but the Marvel blockbuster may still challenge the Jedi-driven franchise for other records.

Infinity War’s Thursday night haul proves that it will be a box-office giant – there was little doubt it wouldn’t be – but just how high it could climb remains a question.

It’s currently tracked to open to over $225million domestically, but now it’s expected to reach even higher numbers, possibly passing the previously mentioned Star Wars flick, which pulled in $248million and currently sits in the top spot as the largest North American opening in history.

The new Avengers film has already pulled in $95million in its first two days, and it has set a number of international records.

The movie has officially scored the biggest opening day in 12 different countries, including Brazil, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and United Arab Emirates, and still hasn’t opened in Russia (May 3) or China (May 11).

While Infinity War is still yet to open in two of the world’s biggest markets, the film might near the $500million mark worldwide by Sunday’s end.

The success of Black Panther could bode well for Infinity War.

The Chadwick Boseman-led superhero film dominated domestic box offices and has pulled in $681million in North America, making it the third largest grossing film of all time in the territory, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7million) and Avatar ($760.5million).
