Axed 2DayFM host Ed Kavalee breaks his silence after his Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast show was cancelled amid dismal ratings

Ed Kavalee has broken his silence on the shock axing of his 2Day FM Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast radio show.

On Tuesday, the comedian revealed how he is holding up following his axing during an interview on Nova Melbourne’s Jase and Lauren radio show.

Ed, 45, was dumped from the airwaves in August, along with his breakfast co-stars Dave Hughes, 53, and Erin Molan, 40.

‘Something we have in common is we’ve both done our time on breakfast radio,’ Jase said.

‘You were hosting breakfast on 2DayFM Sydney and you packed up shop. Well done on the run there, mate. It’s not easy.’

‘Well no, I find it incredibly easy,’ Ed replied sarcastically. ‘In fact I’m going straight to SEN [radio] in Adelaide from here.’

Sensing some reluctance from the comic to touch the subject of his recent job loss, Lauren tried to put a positive spin on things.

‘You’ve got your life back and your mornings back,’ she enthused.

Jase then asked how Ed is feeling about being on ‘gardening leave’, which is when an employee leaves a job – because they’ve resigned or have been terminated – and is instructed to stay away from work during the notice period, while still on the payroll.

‘I just, you know, I should be shedding a tear but I’ve never felt better,’ Ed responded.

Jase then continued: ‘Yeah, when they say, hey, we’re stopping the show today, but we’re gonna keep paying you. How do you take that?’ before comparing the situation to winning the lottery.

‘Look, I’m contractually obliged not to comment. But I just…I don’t know what it’s like to win Powerball,’ Ed said.

‘But all I know is, when the alarm doesn’t go off at 4.30am, things feel right in the world.’

‘You can’t say that to people who are currently doing breakfast radio,’ he joked.

2Day FM announced the axing of its trio of hosts on August 8, informing listeners that they opted to pull the plug on the show and replace it with night shift larrikins Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye, who were hosting The Jimmy and Nath Show.

‘We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025,’ Hughsey, Ed and Erin said in a statement.

‘So with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast.’

The news came after the GfK Radio 360 Survey 4 saw Hughesy, Ed and Erin drop 1.4 points to a 3.6 market share earlier in the year.
