Baby died with COVID-19 in NSW hospital last month – the youngest death from the virus in Australia

An eight-week-old baby died after contracting Covid-19 last month – the youngest person to die with the virus in Australia during the pandemic so far.

Hunter New England Health confirmed the death on Friday morning and said the case had been referred to the coroner to determine if the virus was the primary cause of death.

‘Given uncertainties as to the cause of death, the case has been referred to the coroner,’ it said in a statement.

‘It would be inappropriate to comment further while the Coroner investigates this tragic death.

‘We offer our sincere condolences to the family who we remain in contact with and continue to support.’

The tragic death comes just weeks after a 13-month-old Adelaide girl and a three-year-old Sydney boy died with Covid-19.

The 13-month-old girl had no underlying conditions while the three-year-old boy suffered from a rare genetic condition.
