Bachelorette premiere: Sophie breaks down, regrets carreer

During Wednesday’s Bachelorette premiere, Sophie Monk broke down within minutes.

Wiping away tears, the 37-year-old singer, actress and model said she fears she may have chosen her career over love, and believed the show was her last chance.

‘I feel like I chose my career, and you can’t really have both. I wish I could have balanced it better,’ she told producers.

The former Bardot singer, who spent considerable amount of her career trying to make it in Hollywood, insisted the choice was her one biggest regret.

The admission came in front of her sister, Angelique, prior to entering the mansion for the first time.

Consoling her, Angelique said: ‘Hopefully you do walk away with what you want.’

‘And I just hope that, you know, the right people are there for the right reasons.’

Concluding her pre-show monologue, Sophie said: ‘My intuition is pretty good.’

‘I just think, for me, now in my life, I’m so ready to meet someone and commit and really settle down… The time is now.’ 

Sophie got her start on reality singing show Popstars, subsequently forming the moderately successful band Bardot.

In 2006, she began dating Good Charlotte frontman Benji Madden, with their split confirmed by January 2008.

In 2011, she announced her engagement to Jimmy Esebag, but months later confirmed the split to US talk-show host Chelsea Handler.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, Sophie confirmed that one of the 18-men on this season’s Bachelorette has won her heart.
