  • This morning commuters faced cooler conditions than previous days, with showers hitting northern regions 
  • By tomorrow temperatures are set to soar, with highs of 73F (23C) forecast for London as heatwave continues

The UK is set for more sunshine and scorching temperatures this week despite getting off to a cooler start this morning.  

A brief respite from the Saharan Bubble heatwave comes today as rain is expected in northern parts of Scotland. Though it was a sunny start for swathes of England, commuters are facing scattered clouds and showers in the north-west.

Today there will be highs of 62F (17C) in Edinburgh, 64F (18C) in Belfast and 66F (19C) in Manchester. London is expected to reach temperatures of 73F (23c).

But tomorrow there will be highs of 73F (23C) in the south-east and temperatures are set to rise as the continues, reaching 77F (25C) in the coming days.

By Thursday the heat is set to spread across Britain as it breaks out of the south-east, with highs 75F (24C) across the south of England, south-east, south-west, central and north-east as well as south Wales. 

However, there will be cloud and rain in northern Scotland with moderate winds. Friday will be dry and bright in the south but cloudy with rain for central and northern areas. 

It follows the hottest day of the year on Saturday, with highs of 95C in Northholt, west London. Meanwhile tarmac melted on the A50 in Foston, Derbyshire, on Sunday.

Forecasters initially thought this week could be even hotter, but a 500-mile Greenland ‘cold plume’ has cooled conditions down.
