‘Bad boy of lawn bowls’ suffers black eye after fracas

A 56-year-old known as the ‘bad boy of lawn bowls’ has suffered a broken leg, black eye and rib damage following a hotel bust-up with a reported cage fighter.

Danny Denison was involved in a fracas at the three-star Hotel Celebrity in Bournemouth in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.

The former crown green champion had ‘some banter’ with the fighter before getting involved in a scuffle which left his leg in a plaster.

A friend told The Sun: ‘He got into some banter with an alleged cage fighter. He’s still got a smile on his face though.’

The Hotel Celebrity, which refused to comment when contacted by MailOnline, on Gervis Road, 250 yards from the Bournemouth seafront.

Mr Denison, who is registered disabled after his car crashed into a wall in 2015, said: ‘I don’t know who the attacker was. It’s going to court.’

Dorset Police told MailOnline: ‘At 12:59am on Sunday 31 December 2017 Dorset Police received a report of an assault at the Hotel Celebrity on Gervis Road in Bournemouth.

‘Officers attended, along with the ambulance service, and the victim – a man from Torquay in Devon aged in his 50s – was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries and a suspected broken leg.

‘A 33-year-old man from Chichester in West Sussex was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm and has been released under investigation while police enquiries continue.’

The sportsman received community service for assaulting two women in a Chinese takeaway in 2006 after he thought they made comments about his pink tie.

He told the women: ‘I know you are lesbians because you are ugly,’ Exeter Magistrates Court heard.

Mr Denison, from Torquay, was also jailed for six months for fraud and perjury in 2007.

He served some of his time at Leyhill open prison in Gloucestershire, which has an outdoor green.

And Mr Denison was banned from the World Series in 2015 for leaving the five-star apartment where he was staying in a ‘totally inhospitable state’.

The room could not be used by anyone else for several days because of all the mess, according to a statement from the organisers.
