Vodafone customers will now have to fork out an extra $4 a month for their bill.

The telco will raise the price of mobile data plans, bought before 2024, but insists customers will get more data and their credits will carry over.

In an email sent to its customers, Vodafone said it was ‘investing in our products and systems to provide you with a better experience’ as ‘the costs of doing business continue to grow’.

‘So, we have made the decision to simplify our product range and move you to our Vodafone Infinite plan,’ the email said.

A spokesperson for Vodafone said the change would only affect older plans and that customers who signed up to a new plan in 2024 or 2025, or those upgrading to 2024 and 2025 plans, would not be affected.

‘We have made these changes in response to the continuing high costs of doing business, to support ongoing investment into our products and systems, and to further simplify our product range,’ the spokesperson said.

‘As part of these changes, we are increasing the monthly data allowance for most of the impacted postpaid plans so customers can continue browsing, streaming and enjoying the activities they love on their mobile devices.’

Customers will see the change on their next bill but those who bought the recently instituted Vodafone Infinite plans will not be affected.

The price hike was met with anger from some customers online.

‘They should only be able to increase pricing when a contract has ended its term. I signed a three-year contract and the pricing should stand for that period of time,’ one wrote.

‘That’s all we need! Another greedy telco hiking up prices right in the middle of a cost of living crisis. It looks like we shall have to send smoke signals soon,’ another said.

At the end of 2020, Vodafone Australia (now part of TPG Telecom) had 5.25million mobile customers and 2.17million fixed broadband customers.

It makes Vodafone the third-largest telco in Australia.

Fellow telco Telstra hiked its prices to most of its data plans last year including a $3 increase to its Mobile Plan Basic.
