Banned Russian world No1 Dannii Medvedev posts a VERY cheeky tweet during Wimbledon men’s final

World No 1 Daniil Medvedev posts a VERY cheeky tweet during Wimbledon men’s final after he and other Russians were barred from competing due to war in Ukraine

  • Medvedev was an Australian Open finalist but was banned from Wimbledon
  • He has remained largely quiet on the sanctions handed down by Wimbledon
  • However he posted a cheeky video during the men’s final on Sunday
  • It showed that no matter what, he will end up on top once the dust has settled

If the world No 1 tennis player is upset by being banned from Wimbledon, Daniil Medvedev sure has a funny way of showing it.

Medvedev was one of five top 50 men’s players blocked from competing at Wimbledon including Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Ilya Ivashka and Aslan Karatsev.

Ten prominent women were also barred, including Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina, Victoria Azarenka, Veronika Kudermetova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Liudmila Samsonova, Varvara Gracheva, Anastasia Potapova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The ban on Russian and Belarusian players was controversially put in place by Wimbledon in response to the Ukraine war.

Medvedev has largely remained silent on the issue on social media, outside of a few snaps of him playing golf in his enforced down time.

However the Russian No 1 couldn’t help himself on the day of the final between Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and champion Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev, the beaten Australian Open finallist, showed a video of him relaxing on the couch while the final was being played.

Daniil Medvedev of Russia hits a forehand against Rafael Nadal of Spain in the final of the men’s singles of the 2022 Australian Open

As the camera panned right, it showed a massive trophy case with all of his silverware and eventually landed on a television – that was playing the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Because Wimbledon banned the Russian and Belarusian players, the ATP and WTA made the decision to remove ranking points from the event.

That means that Medvedev will remain world No.1 without having to lift a finger.

It also cost Kyrgios a chance of cracking back into the world top 20, while Djokovic’s ranking will actually plummet from No.3 to No.7 despite the fact he drew level with Rafael Nadal on a record 21 grand slam victories.
