Pau, an electrical engineering graduate, was originally from Barcelona but was living 35 miles away in the town of Vilafranca.

He worked at the nearby Bodegas Torres vineyard as a cellar technician, having previously studied electrical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

Pau lived with his girlfriend and played football for his local team.

After leaving university he travelled in Latin America and also worked as a volunteer in Haiti following the earthquake in 2010.

The town hall in Vilafranca declared three days of mourning following his death.

Police have not officially confirmed a link between Pau’s death and the terror attack.

But they are investigating whether the driver of the van who killed 13 on the Ramblas went on to murder Pau as he fled.

Police told local media the driver of the Ford Focus was of north African origin.
