Lionel Messi has been named Champions League Player of the Week after his performance against Liverpool.

The Barcelona star scored twice including a stunning free-kick during his side’s 3-0 victory over the Reds on Wednesday night.

Ajax duo Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek were up for nomination after both played starring roles at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday, while Luis Suarez was also nominated.

Van de Beek scored in the first half against Spurs and have left Mauricio Pochettino’s side with a difficult task when they face each other again in Amsterdam next week.

De Jong, who will join Barcelona at the end of the season, also orchestrated things for Ajax to put Spurs under real pressure.

Suarez missed out on the award despite scoring the crucial opener against his former side but Messi outdid him as doubled Barcelona’s lead before scoring a fantastic free kick to leave Liverpool with it all to do at Anfield.

Messi has won the accolade three times already this season but surprisingly missed out on the award the whole of last season.

Barcelona were very happy that their talisman won the award as they tweeted: ‘You have chosen… WISELY.’

One person replied to the announcement of the award with a GIF of Britney Spears saying ‘obviously’.

While another person posted a GIF of someone pretending to be shocked and someone posted a photo of Messi smiling.
