Barcelona’s Luis Suarez slammed by John Aldridge for antics against Liverpool in Champions League

‘He behaved like a rat’: Barcelona’s Luis Suarez slammed by John Aldridge for his antics against former club Liverpool in Champions League

  • Luis Suarez scored in the first-leg as Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-0 at Nou Camp
  • Suarez celebrated against his former club, which surprised many Liverpool fans
  • The Uruguayan also snipped away at Liverpool players throughout the match
  • Ahead of the return at Anfield, John Aldridge was heavily critical of Suarez

John Aldridge has accused Luis Suarez of acting like a ‘rat’ during Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over his former side Liverpool last week.

Suarez, who played at Liverpool between the years of 2011-14, opened the scoring at the Nou Camp before Lionel Messi scored a brace to put the Champions League semi-final tie firmly in Barcelona’s favour.

But Suarez was heavily criticised for celebrating his strike against his former club and snipping away at Liverpool players throughout the European clash.

And ahead of the return-leg at Anfield on Tuesday, Liverpool goalscoring great Aldridge slammed Suarez for his actions against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

‘Suarez behaved like a rat in the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool and it was out of order,’ Aldridge told the Irish Independent.

Aldridge claimed he had no problem with the Uruguay international’s celebration but more his antics throughout the 90 minutes.

He added: ‘What was not acceptable was his antics on and off the ball, as he got into the faces of Liverpool players, fell over any time anyone went near him and tried to get his opponents booked at every opportunity.

‘He was sneaky, he was nasty and he was everything people used to tell us Suarez was when everyone at Liverpool was trying to defend him.

‘We know this is a guy who would run over his granny to score a goal, but everyone should have some respect for those who have been good to you in the past, but Suarez threw the support Liverpool gave him back in our faces.’

Suarez became one of the world’s most feared strikers while at Liverpool and was targeted by a number of clubs – including Arsenal – before his move to Barca.

The 32-year-old, who tried to force his way out of Anfield ahead of his eventual move in 2014, was heavily supported by Liverpool on a number of occasions, most notably following his controversial clashes with Patrice Evra and Branislav Ivanovic.

And Aldridge believes Suarez should have shown his class when coming up against his former side who backed him to the limit.

‘It would have been easy for Liverpool to turn their back on Suarez after his infamous clash with Patrice Evra or when he sank his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic, but our club stands by their own when times are tough and that’s what all did with this little striker.

‘We could see he was high maintenance and did things we didn’t like. He was a bit of a diver at times and biting opponents is bang out of order, but his brilliance on the field ensured he was worth the hassle that came with him.’

Liverpool have it all to do at Anfield on Tuesday night and it has been made a whole lot harder due to injuries.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have already been ruled out, while Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are doubts after missing training on Monday.
