Bathurst Street, Sydney fire: 500 people evacuated from residential tower

Around 500 people have been evacuated after a small fire erupted in a rubbish chute at one of Sydney’s tallest residential towers.

New South Wales Fire and Rescue were called to the Greenland Centre building on Bathurst Street about 12pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Multiple small fires in the rubbish chute as well as in bins inside the basement are understood to have broken out.

Eighteen firetrucks and 72 firefighters were on scene. Police and paramedics also attended.

The Greenland Centre Building is 235m tall and comprises of more than 450 apartments.
