Batley thief struck by Jaguar as he tries to make a getaway

Shocking CCTV footage captured the moment an alleged thief was hit head-on by a car while trying to retrieve his stolen bike.

The thief had already allegedly stolen a flat bed truck from outside the Jem Speed Shop in Batley, West Yorkshire, earlier that day but returned to pick up the bike he arrived on but had to ditch.

Luckily police were already examining CCTV and spotted him attempting to make another getaway on the bike, and soon made chase.

The motorbike he arrived on as a passenger managed to get away, but as he tried to drive off on the newly-retrieved bike he was hit by a Jaguar coming along in the opposite direction.

Earlier that day a flat bed truck was stolen in Batley, West Yorkshire, and when police examined CCTV they realised the thief had arrived on a bike which he left behind

The shocking video from Tuesday, which has been dubbed ‘Grand Theft Batley’, went viral after being posted on social media.

Josh Gudgeon, who captured the video, said: ‘Police were at the engineering firm behind us after they’d had a flat bed truck stolen.

‘We have loads of CCTV and they watched it and worked out the truck thief had arrived on a stolen bike which he’d parked outside our shop.

‘As police were watching the footage, a guy on a motorbike pulls up and his passenger runs out to retrieve the stolen bike which he’d left earlier as he’d driven off in a stolen van.

While watching the footage, the alleged thief is dropped off by a friend, and then hops on the bike with the intention of stealing it back as police chase him

‘The first bike leaves but the second one is struck by a Jag as a police officer and a customer ran to stop him.’

Josh said the bizarre incident was captured as they were already recording for the shop’s weekly blog.

He added: ‘It’s unbelievable what happened. The police officer did really well as he caught the guy and together with another customer he detained him.

‘Police back up was also really quick and the guy was arrested and had ankle injuries. The driver of the Jag wasn’t hurt and he wasn’t too upset as it was a company car.’
