Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness issues key update on Matthijs De Ligt’s future amid Man United’s interest in the defender

  • Manchester United are keen to bring the Dutch centre-back to Old Trafford
  • But, there is currently no agreement between the two clubs over a deal

Uli Hoeness has confirmed a defender ‘could leave’ Bayern Munich in the coming weeks amid Manchester United being keen to sign Matthijs De Ligt from the German club.

United have been amongst the Premier League’s busiest recruiters during the summer transfer market with both Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro moving to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is keen to be reunited with his former Ajax captain De Ligt and publicly declared United’s interest in the centre-back ahead of their pre-season win over Rangers on Friday.

Former Bayern president Hoeness has now spoken out on United’s interest but admitted he would be happy to see the Dutchman stay at the Bundesliga giants.

It has previously been reported that De Ligt has agreed personal terms with the Manchester side as Ten Hag seeks to add a second Dutch signing of the summer, but there is currently no agreement between the two clubs.

Hoeness coyly suggested De Ligt could be on his way to the 13-time Premier League champions this summer by noting the Dutchman is of the same nationality as Ten Hag.

He also commented on the future of centre-back Dayot Upamecano who has just two years remaining on his existing contract at the Allianz Arena.

‘It is possible that a defender will still leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Man United is Dutch. I would have no problem if he stays,’ he told German journalist Maximilian Koch.

‘Personally, I would not sell Upamecano,’ added Hoeness as he offered his verdict on players that could depart Munich.

De Ligt is currently enjoying an extended break following the Netherlands’ participation in Euro 2024 – despite failing to feature in a single game at the tournament.

The 24-year-old has endured mixed fortunes since joining Bayern from Juventus two-years ago in a deal believed to be worth around £68m.

United are keen to offer the combative defender a long-term contract at the club as a sign of investment in a player seeking to get back to his best following a mixed few years.
