Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise the ONLY player to remove silver medal after France’s heartbreaking extra time loss to Spain in Olympics football final

  •  France lost 5-3 in an extra time thriller to Spain in the final of the Olympics
  •  Olise cut a devastated figure on the podium and removed his silver medal
  •  The 22-year-old’s attention now turns to his first season with Bayern Munich

French winger Michael Olise was so devastated after the Olympic men’s football final that he was the only player from his team to remove his silver medal.

Two goals from impact substitute Sergio Camello in extra time lifted Spain to a dramatic 5-3 victory in the final in what was the nation’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s football since the 1992 Barcelona Games.

It was a cruel way to lose for the French in front of their home crowd given Crystal Palace marksman Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a dramatic equaliser in second half stoppage time to make it 3-3.

However, Thierry Henry’s side simply didn’t have enough in the tank during extra time as Spain simply had too much for the host nation.

As brutal as a loss in front of their own fans at the Parc Des Princes was, France’s players were graceful in defeat when presented with their silver medals.

But for Olise, his devastation was palpable.

Standing alongside his French teammates on the podium, Olise received his silver medal but quickly stuffed it into the front pocket of his jacket.

According to Eurosport, the 22-year-old was the only French player to do so.

Over the course of the tournament, Olise scored just twice for France with a goal in the host nation’s opening Group A game against the United States and another in the semi finals against Egypt.

However, he was unable to inject himself into the final as much as he’d have liked as Spain proved to be far too good.

With his Olympics now done and dusted, Olise’s attention now turns towards his debut season with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Olise was signed by the German club from Crystal Palace in July on a five-year deal as he became one of new Bayern boss Vincent Kompany’s first signings.

The 22-year-old’s move to Bayern came on the back of a scintillating season for Crystal Palace in which he scored 10 goals and registered six assists from 19 appearances.

His form at the end of the season for Palace had some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs on red alert, including Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, the chance to play Champions League football with Bayern ultimately proved to be a decisive factor as Kompany attempts to restore the club’s status as the dominant force in Germany.

Bayern failed to win the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2011-12 season as Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen enjoyed a remarkable unbeaten season to finish top of the pile.
