He’s been at the centre of plastic surgery rumours for years, having debuted a remarkably expressionless new look in 2016.

And  Baz Luhrmann, 60, did little to dispel the whispers during a live interview with Sunrise on Wednesday.

The iconic Australian director, whose Elvis biopic is the subject of Oscar buzz, looked unrecognisable compared to his former self, displaying a wrinkle-free complexion and unusually plump cheeks.

His visage appeared unnaturally shiny, while his jawline seemed noticeably more pronounced than they did during his formative years in the spotlight.

The star’s face only bore a passing resemblance to the Baz who shot to fame in 1992 with the hit film Strictly Ballroom.

Once upon a time, the talented director sported a more rugged appearance with natural wrinkles and skin contours common for men of his age.

This changed over the years, with The Romeo + Juliet director first making headlines.

While his looks may have changed, the high calibre of his work remains the same.

His latest film Elvis has been nominated for an Oscar in multiple categories including Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.

Luhrmann’s creative director wife Catherine Martin, who designed the costumes and sets for the biopic, has also landed three Oscar nominations for her work on the film.

The film’s leading man Austin Butler is meanwhile up for the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Elvis Presley.

In June last year Luhrmann hinted that he’s planning to retire following the release of Elvis, telling Variety Australia: ‘I am at the point in my journey where I am like, would I even bother making another film?’
