BBC agree deal with UK Athletics to cover four major track and field championships in Britain

BBC to cover four major track and field championships in Britain this year after agreeing deal with UK Athletics

  • The BBC will show four events including the British Indoor Championships
  • Broadcast deal also covers Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham on February 19
  • Governing body had been criticised following expiration of previous deal

UK Athletics has struck an important new deal with the BBC after fears that it was in danger of withering away from the terrestrial spotlight.

The governing body had been heavily criticised following the expiration of their previous deal with the Beeb in 2020.

But following talks between the broadcaster and UKA interim CEO Mark Munro an agreement has been reached for the BBC to show four events this year – the Indoor Grand Prix and British Indoor Championships, both of which take place in BIrmingham this month, and the Birmingham Diamond League and British Championships meets later in the year.

The BBC will show four events this year including the British Indoor Championships

Munro said: ‘Athletics is given a brilliant platform by BBC Sport and we’re looking forward to working with the team there to bring great athletics performances into people’s homes in the year ahead.

‘The audience reach of their website, red button and iPlayer platforms coupled with the main network means our athletes’ journeys can be followed in a number of ways by fans of the sport and in this stellar year for athletics it is more important than ever to maximise the exposure that the four major track and field championships will bring.’

The series begins on February 19 with the Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham.
