BBC axes A Question of Sport after more than 50 years with chiefs citing ‘inflation and funding challenges’ for the long-running quiz show’s cancellation

  • Production of BBC quiz show A Question of Sport has been halted indefinitely
  • A spokesperson from the BBC cited ‘funding challenges’ as a reason for decision
  • The show celebrated 50 years on air in 2020, with than 1300 episodes in total

The BBC has announced that the long-running sports quiz show A Question of Sport is no longer in production.

A BBC spokesperson told The Mirror: ‘Due to inflation and funding challenges difficult decisions have to be made, therefore Question of Sport is currently not in production at the moment.’

The decision is said to have been made as a result of the programme suffering depleting ratings in recent years, combined with a lack of on-demand appeal.

However, while production has been halted, the BBC are said to confirmed that the brand is not for sale and the format could be revived in the future.

The show first debuted in 1970, and was fronted by Wimbledon semi-finalist Sue Barker for 24 years prior to her departure in 2020.
