  • Robyn Cowen’s swipe was more cheeky after joking Jonas Eidevall was one of the BBC’s ‘symbolic men’

BBC commentator Robyn Cowen has taken a cheeky swipe at Lord Sugar after he called the corporation out for ‘sexist’ all-women panels at the Women’s Euros this summer.

The Apprentice host has received backlash for his controversial comments about the broadcaster’s coverage of this summer’s tournament, including from Gabby Logan and Ian Wright.

But Cowen also joined the pair when she was commentating on England’s 8-0 thrashing of Norway in Brighton on Monday evening, which saw Sarina Wiegman’s side qualify for the knockouts with a game to spare.

When the hosts were 6-0 up towards the end of the first half, the BBC cameras panned to a shot of Arsenal women’s boss Jonas Eidevall, a studio guest alongside Wright, Alex Scott and Logan.

When the cameras returned to the action on the field, Cowen said: ‘That was a lovely shot of one of our studio guests Jonas Eidevall, one of our symbolic men.’

She then simply added: ‘Good evening Lord Sugar.’

The most fierce backlash to the 75-year-old’s comments came from Arsenal legend Wright, who responded by slamming his comments and labelled them ‘laughable’.

‘I was pleased to see my old mate Ian Wright was given the opportunity to commentate on the ladies game last night,’ Lord Sugar wrote on Twitter.

‘I wonder if my earlier tweet below touched a nerve. Of course BBC sport will say not at all, Ian was already lined up for it.’

The business tycoon had said on the same platform on Saturday: ‘I am watching the women football and notice that ALL the commentators are women.

‘I also note when men’s football is on there is a symbolic female commentator to cover the broadcasters a**e. Should I complain there should me a male commentator in women’s football.’

Arsenal legend Wright then said in a video on Twitter: ‘Can everybody please stop sending me the tweet? I was taking my daughter to singing lessons and the tweet’s just blowing up, it’s doing my head in, I can’t believe it.

‘Alan, the thing is my friend, rather than just saying “I got it wrong lots of men are working at all levels of the tournament”, you doubled down on some complete f***ing foolishness.

‘In your mind you actually thought after you sent that tweet that the BBC phoned me up, never mind the fact that we’ve been ready to do this for a year, I’ve been booked for a year. You genuinely think they called me up and said “Ian you’ve got to get back from Germany ASAP, Alan Sugar’s tweeted and we can’t upset him, we need to get you on.” You genuinely believed that that happened because I need to know because that says to me my God your ego is totally out of control.

‘Where’s the people around you to hug you bro? You need some hugs man. You’re coming on Twitter for attention like this, it’s laughable.

‘Stop doing it to yourself but I’ve got to say thank you, thank you for that tweet because if it wasn’t for you I would have missed one of the greatest ever England games that’s ever been played.

‘The thing is all seriousness I’m glad you’re watching and the only thing that you can find fault with doesn’t even exist.

‘I sit in rooms with ex-players belittling the women’s game all the time, I’m so glad it annoys you and all of them.

‘Can I just say I hope you enjoy the rest of the tournament. Can you please tweet again so I can work Friday? Please. God bless.’

BBC presenter Gabby Logan was the anchor of the match on Monday and called out Lord Sugar, slamming him as a ‘parody’.

Logan was quick to respond Lord Sugar’s claim all-women panels were ‘sexist’ on Saturday, writing: ‘We have plenty of men working on this tournament Lord Sugar, don’t fret you’re not being eradicated.’
