Dreaming of a gorgeous Mediterranean island escape?

A stunning little-known island, under four hours away, could be the answer to your dreams.

Djerba, a gorgeous and historic island off the coast of Tunisia, has recently become much easier to reach thanks to new easyJet direct flights.

easyJet has launched the UK’s first direct flights to the island, offering regular trips from Manchester and London Luton.

The budget airline says: ‘Djerba is a tapestry of cultures, history and tranquil seaside living.

‘With a population nearing 160,000, it’s a blend of traditional Tunisian heritage and Mediterranean influences.

‘Known for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Djerba is also a cradle of rich history, where ancient traditions coexist with modern comforts.’

The island was even described as the ‘land of the Lotus-eaters’ by the ancient Greek poet Homer as he considered it such a seductive destination that travellers found it near impossible to leave.

Djerba’s modern-day tourists might find themselves facing the same struggle.

Top attractions include desert safaris and Djerbahood, an incredible open-air museum. The museum is a traditional village that’s been decorated by street artists.

Tourists can also wander the shops at the Bazaar Houmt Souk, the island’s most iconic market.

Another top site is the El Ghriba synagogue, an ancient Orthodox Jewish synagogue and the oldest in Tunisia.

Each year thousands of Jews make a pilgrimage to El Ghriba to celebrate the holiday of Lag B’Omer.

And of course, there are also spectacular beaches for tourists who want to relax in the sun.

easyJet recommends Sidi Mahrez beach resort which it describes as having a ‘laidback atmosphere’.

While the island regularly enjoys temperatures above 30 degrees in the summer, it’s also an ideal destination for a spot of winter sun.

Temperatures rarely fall below 19 degrees in March, making spring the perfect time to escape dreary UK weather.

And Djerba isn’t the only island destination that’s become easier to explore than ever.

easyJet has also launched flights to a gorgeous island that’s often described as the ‘African Caribbean’.

Meanwhile, the ‘Hawaii of Europe’ has also become easier to reach with a host of new flight routes.
