Beauty expert: This is exactly how much of every skin product you should be using

A dermatologist has revealed exactly how much of every skin product you need to put on your face, and why using too much or too little is contributing to your breakouts.

British skin expert Dr Sam Bunting shared a handy graphic on her Instagram page showing just how much sunscreen, serum, moisturiser, cleanser, eye cream and night cream you need to apply.

She said if you use too little, you ‘won’t see the benefits you could be reaping’, while if you use too much, you’re ‘at risk of experiencing irritation with actives and you’re wasting money’.

When it comes to sunscreen, which you need to apply every day even if it’s cloudy, Dr Sam recommends you use two finger lengths on your face.

Dr Sam said you should opt for a broad spectrum product that blocks both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays – and make sure you don’t forget the lesser-thought-about spots like behind your ears and your neck.

For moisturiser, a fingertip is sufficient, and the same applies for day and night serums.

‘When you’re cleansing, I recommend using as much as a two pound or 50 cent coin,’ Dr Sam said.

Finally, with eye cream, you only need a pea-sized amount: ‘Think petit pois baby peas’, Dr Sam added.

Thousands who saw the post were shocked by her advice, with many saying in particular they use too little sunscreen:

‘Holy sh*t, I really use too little sunscreen, but why do brands sell 50mL volumes of facial sunscreen then,’ one commenter wrote.

Another added: ‘If I used this much, it would just sit on my skin and/or make it break out (yes, even if I DID apply thin layers and try to really work it in),’ another added.

Previously, Dr Sam Bunting shared exactly how she gets her skin ‘holiday-ready’ and the products she doesn’t leave home without.

According to Dr Sam, if you want to be looking your radiant best on holiday, you need to get into a good holiday prep skincare regime a fortnight beforehand.

She starts with Neostrata Lotion Plus 15%, which she uses twice a day up to her trip.

The dermatologist swears this helps to ‘minimise that rough bumpiness that can appear on thighs and backs of arms’.

As well as the Neostrata Lotion, Dr Sam said she also mists Sesderma Azelac Lotion all over her face and applies St Tropez’s Gradual Tan Mousse for a gradual and subtle glow.

‘I use it with a mitt for a few days to take off that milky blue Irish thing I’ve got going on with my legs,’ she said in a video on the subject.

Your holiday skincare doesn’t stop once you get on board your airplane.

In fact, Dr Sam said it should only ramp up at this point.

‘If I’m going on an overnight flight, say to Thailand, I’ll pack everything I need to survive the ordeal that is air travel – which means dry air that is going to promote breakouts,’ she said.

In the dermatologist’s bag of tricks, Dr Sam said she includes ‘basics’ such as cotton pads, cotton buds and a baby bottle of Bioderma micellar water, which she decants in order to take on board with her.

‘I always take any hint of makeup off as soon I board,’ Dr Sam said.

Following this, she uses a strong moisturiser to ensure she has adequate hydration on board. For this, Dr Sam favours her own Dr Sam Flawless Moisturiser.

She even said she touches up on board every time she wakes up from a sleep and feels that her skin isn’t as hydrated as it once was.

‘I don’t interrupt my nighttime routine for anything,’ Dr Sam added – which means she will also bring a retinoid on board to ensure her skin looks its best.

Typically for this, Dr Sam said she’ll use Dr Sam’s Flawless Nightly Serum.

To keep her lips hydrated, she relies on Bioderma Atoderm Lip Stick.

Provided you have applied ‘your moisturiser like a fiend’, Dr Sam said you should look ‘dewier than when you departed’ once you land at your destination.

To ensure the holiday glow sticks around, she swears by a ‘little bit of light makeup’ upon landing.

The best products to use in this capacity are Nars’ famous Radiant Creamy Concealer, Stila’s Convertible Colour blush, Lipstick Queen Nothing But The Truth lipstick and Kevyn Aucoin’s Brunette Eyebrow Pencil to fill in her brows.

‘I tend to travel with cream textures – I tend to find them easier both on the plane and on arrival,’ Dr Sam said.
